Can You Put Electronics in a Dumpster? What’s Allowed and What Needs Special Disposal

Learn how to get rid of everything and move without stress. Practical steps for sorting, donating, selling, and disposing of belongings before moving day.

Pile of old electronics including computer monitors, printers, keyboards and cables set out for disposal

Cleaning out a garage, an attic, or a whole house usually turns up a pile of old electronics. A tube TV nobody watches, a desktop tower from 2009, a printer that jams on every page. So when the dumpster shows up, the big question is whether all of that can go in with everything else.

Here's the short answer: yes, most household electronics can go in a Momentum dumpster. A handful of items carry a small fee, a few are not allowed at all, and some are worth recycling instead. This guide walks through exactly what's allowed, what isn't, and where to take the rest in Blount County and the surrounding area.

Can You Put Electronics in a Dumpster?

Yes. With Momentum Dumpsters, you can put most everyday electronics in your dumpster, including TVs, computers, monitors, printers, and small appliances. The exceptions are electronics that hold refrigerant, fluids, or certain batteries.

The reason is simple. Momentum follows the rules of the local landfill where our loads go, not a generic national list. If the landfill accepts an item, it can go in your dumpster. If the landfill charges for it, we pass along a flat fee. If the landfill bans it, it has to be handled another way.

That's why you'll see different answers online. A dumpster company in another state may say no to electronics because their landfill or state law says no. If you're renting a dumpster in Maryville, TN or anywhere on our East Tennessee routes, the rules below are the ones that apply to you.

What Electronics Can Go in a Dumpster?

Most household electronics are fine to toss in a 15 or 30 yard Momentum dumpster with no extra charge. If it plugs into the wall and doesn't hold refrigerant or fluids, it's usually allowed.

Common electronics you can throw in a dumpster:

  • TVs, including older tube (CRT) TVs and flat screens
  • Desktop computers, laptops, and monitors
  • Printers, scanners, and fax machines
  • Keyboards, mice, cables, and chargers
  • DVD players, stereos, speakers, and game consoles
  • Microwaves, toaster ovens, and coffee makers
  • Vacuums, fans, and space heaters
  • Washers, dryers, stoves, and dishwashers
  • Power tools with the battery pack removed

Can you throw electronics in a dumpster with other junk?

Yes. You don't need a separate dumpster for electronics. They can go in the same load as furniture, carpet, boxes, and general cleanout debris. Just keep the prohibited items listed below out of the mix.

Which Items Carry an Extra Fee?

Three items are accepted but have a flat per-item fee, because the landfill charges extra to process them. The fee is billed with pickup, so there's nothing to pay upfront.

ItemFee per item
Refrigerators$50
Mattresses and box springs$25
Vehicle tires$20

Refrigerators are the only electronic item on this list. If you're clearing out a kitchen or garage fridge, just let us know so it's counted at pickup.

What Can't Go in a Dumpster?

The local landfill does not accept the items below, so they can't go in your dumpster. Several of them are appliances or electronics-adjacent, which is where most people get tripped up.

Prohibited items:

  • Air conditioning units, including window units
  • Hot water tanks
  • Vehicle batteries (you can leave these beside the dumpster and we'll pick them up)
  • Paint, in cans or aerosol
  • Chemicals
  • Motor oil and other automotive fluids
  • Propane tanks
  • Asbestos

Why are air conditioners not allowed?

AC units contain refrigerant and compressor oil that have to be removed by a certified technician before the unit can be scrapped. The landfill won't take them as regular debris. Refrigerators have the same issue, which is why they come with a $50 fee rather than going in free.

If you have a freezer, wine cooler, or dehumidifier, those also use refrigerant. Call or text us at 865-393-3098 before loading one so we can tell you how it's handled.

What about batteries in electronics?

Vehicle batteries can't go inside the dumpster, but you can set them next to it and our driver will take them at pickup.

For laptops, cordless tools, phones, and anything else with a rechargeable battery, we recommend pulling the battery out before tossing the device. Damaged lithium-ion batteries can spark or catch fire when they get crushed. Retailers like Batteries Plus in Alcoa, Lowe's, and The Home Depot take rechargeable batteries for recycling.

Where do I take household hazardous waste?

Paint, chemicals, and similar items can go to the Blount County Recycling Center on Levi Street in Maryville. Keep Blount Beautiful keeps an up-to-date list of accepted items, hours, and other drop-off locations in the area.

Can You Throw a TV in a Dumpster?

Yes, you can throw a TV in a Momentum dumpster. That includes flat screens, projection TVs, and the heavy tube TVs that seem to live in every basement.

A few tips for TVs:

  • Keep the screen intact. Older tube TVs have leaded glass inside, so set them in gently rather than dropping or smashing them.
  • Watch the weight. A big tube TV can weigh 100 pounds or more. A few of them add up fast against your included tonnage.
  • Consider donating first. If it still works, a local thrift store or a neighbor may want it.

Homeowners clearing out older properties around Knox County run into this a lot. If you're booking a dumpster rental in Knoxville, TN for an estate or rental cleanout, old TVs and computer gear can go right in with everything else.

Why Do Some Dumpster Companies Say No to Electronics?

Because disposal rules change from state to state and landfill to landfill. Some states have laws that ban TVs, computers, and other e-waste from landfills entirely. Dumpster companies operating there have to say no.

Tennessee does not currently have a statewide landfill ban on electronic devices. What decides it here is the landfill your load goes to. Momentum's local landfill accepts most household electronics, so we do too.

The takeaway: if you read a national blog that says electronics are never allowed, it may be true for that company's area. For our East Tennessee routes, the list in this guide is what counts. When in doubt, call before you load.

Should You Recycle or Donate Electronics Instead?

If an item still works or has parts worth saving, recycling or donating is often the better move. It keeps usable materials out of the landfill and can free up space in your dumpster.

Local options around Blount and Knox County include:

  • Alcoa/Maryville/Blount County Landfill in Friendsville accepts computers and computer equipment for recycling.
  • Best Buy in Knoxville takes many TVs, computers, and small electronics.
  • UT Office of Sustainability public drop-off in Knoxville accepts electronics and batteries.
  • Target in Maryville and Batteries Plus in Alcoa take select small electronics.
  • Thrift stores and online marketplaces are good for anything that still works.

Accepted items and fees change, so call ahead or check Keep Blount Beautiful's disposal guide before you drive over.

Wipe your data before you toss anything

Whether a device goes in the dumpster or to a recycler, clear your personal information first.

  1. Back up photos, files, and contacts you want to keep.
  2. Sign out of your accounts and run a factory reset on phones, tablets, and laptops.
  3. For old desktops, remove the hard drive or have it wiped before disposal.

Do You Need an E-Waste Dumpster Rental?

No special e-waste dumpster rental is needed. Our standard 15 and 30 yard dumpsters handle electronics along with the rest of your cleanout or remodel debris.

SizePriceIncluded weightBest for
15 yard$300 for 3 days, $325 for 7 days2 tonsGarage, attic, and single-room cleanouts
30 yard$550 for 14 days3 tonsWhole-house and estate cleanouts, remodels

We run daily routes from Maryville across Blount, Knox, Loudon, and Monroe County. Whether you need a dumpster rental in Madisonville, TN for a farmhouse cleanout or a driveway drop in Alcoa, the same flat rates and disposal rules apply.

How Should You Load Electronics in a Dumpster?

Load heavy, flat items first and fragile items gently. A little planning helps you fit more and avoid broken glass.

  • Put heavy appliances like washers and stoves on the bottom.
  • Lay TVs and monitors flat, screen side down, so they don't crack.
  • Fill gaps with smaller items like keyboards, cables, and speakers.
  • Keep everything below the top rim of the dumpster.
  • Set vehicle batteries on the ground beside the dumpster, not inside it.
  • Tell us about any refrigerators or tires so the fees are counted at pickup.
